Why a February 29th? Leap Year Explained

Seasons and astronomical events do not repeat in full, 24 hour days. By adding an additional day into a year every fours years, the calendars can correctly repeat the same number of days in each year and events that drift over time. A common year has 365 days, but a leap year has 366 days which included the extra day on February 29th. A leap year, also known as an intercalary year or a bissextile year, gets is name from the process of fixed dates in the Gregorian calendar normally advances one day of the week from one year to the next, but a leap year added the extra day and dates "leap forward" two days from March through the end of the year. The Gregorian calendar was introduced in October 1582 to make a 0.002% correction in the length of a year which accounts for the addition of the extra day added to the end of February.
